As the disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic continue to affect us all, here is a wonderful resource for children and their parents. “My Hero is You” is a lovely, illustrated storybook created by children for children. It is designed to be read by and with parents as an opportunity to explore key concerns children may have, supporting their sense of agency and their ability to understand and cope with COVID and the public health measures affecting their lives. Sarah, the tale’s central character, flies around the world with Ario, her heart-dragon, meeting other children and sharing messages about how they can all stay safe, cope with fear, and be heroes by caring for each other.
The story is creative commons licenced (so that anyone can download it and use it for free) and is available in multiple languages. It was informed by the input of over 1,700 children, parents, caregivers, and teachers from around, and produced by the Inter-Agency Standing Committee Reference Group on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergency Settings (IASC MHPSS RG).
