Resilience Innovation Skills

(RIS) Certificate


This Continuing Studies Professional and Applied Certificate, offered by the RbD lab in collaboration with Royal Roads University, is comprised of 8 experiential, non-credit learning labs , designed to broaden understanding, build on competencies and confidence while enhancing careers.

Each of the eight RIS Labs will be delivered face-to-face, online or in a blended format. Each lab focuses on supporting the development of competencies related to social innovation, community based research, and resource mobilization to address the complex challenges of climate change adaptation and disaster risk.

These capabilities include skills related to:

Transformative leadership; Design thinking; Creative solution development and implementation; Community based action research; Coalition forming;
Resource and knowledge mobilization.


RIS Certificate Overview

Lab 1: Introduction to creative community action research
Discover new ways to explore lived experiences, draw out creative potential, & synthesize ideas for community impact, using art, games, nature, photography, video, and drama.
Lab 2: Introduction to design thinking
Venture into the world of design thinking to envision communities in a new way, build connections, and prototype solutions.
Lab 3: Explore: Generating good information
Learn about research and engagement strategies for gathering good information in a particular problem space. Develop and practice interview skills in order to explore how youth are impacted and involved in disasters and community resilience building.
Lab 4: Connect: Analysis and Engagement
This lab focuses on developing skills related to inductive data analysis through community engagement processes and user-friendly analytic software. This lab involves both face-to-face workshop activities focused on skills related to participatory analysis and a virtual session that introduces working with Dedoose, a digital analysis tool.
Lab 5: Reflect: Sense making and story development
In this lab we will engage in skills that support reflection, sense-making, and that begin the process of an outcomes-based problem identification and story development.
Lab 6: Create: Digital Storytelling
Digital storytelling is a research and community engagement method that allows participants to share their perspectives. In this lab, they will have the opportunity to learn about storytelling and how to put together digital stories.
Lab 7: Experiment: Innovation prototyping through technology, art, policy and…
Lab 7 provides opportunities to be introduced to different approaches to problem exploration and prototyping. This lab will involve three workshop options for innovating with technology, art, policy or other avenues of interest. Workshops will include: Art for Social Action; Technology and Innovation; and Non-linear Policy Development.
Lab 8: Seed: Coalition building and mobilizing resources
The final lab provides an opportunity to develop and pitch a proposal for an applied resilience innovation project. This provides an opportunity to pitch resilience innovation ideas to receive constructive feedback from local decision makers, experts and policy influencers. This lab will end with a graduation party to celebrate certificate completion.
